Tree Trail

Welcome to a new feature of the Woodland-Toboggan Hill Loops Trail

Merrickville is fortunate to host a short trail loop on the village’s east side that winds through a remarkably diverse ecosystem, all within just a few acres. Despite its brief length, the trail offers a journey through a rich variety of landscapes and habitats. You’ll start in a well-established mixed forest of a riverine valley and gradually ascend the limestone ridge of Collar Hill, where the thin, rocky soils support resilient pioneer tree species. Along the way, you’ll encounter a fascinating array of over 23 major tree species lining the path. Can you spot them all?

To enhance your experience, we’ve added information placards along the trail, each highlighting a different tree species. The placards display the tree’s common names in English, French, and Anishinaabemowin, as well as its scientific (Latin) name. You’ll also find images of the tree in both summer and winter, along with interesting facts about its ecological and cultural significance—all designed to be read in under a minute.

We believe in the power of nature to inspire, heal, and educate. The Woodland-Toboggan Hill Loops Trail now offers an educational interpretive experience suitable for all ages, showcasing the rich diversity of our local tree species. Whether you want to deepen your understanding of the natural world or simply enjoy a peaceful walk, this recreational trail has something for everyone.
